Lower Back Pain Treatment in Liverpool

Lower back pain can make training, working, sitting, bending, and even getting out of a chair more difficult than it should be.

At My Massage Therapist in Liverpool, I provide assessment-led remedial and sports massage for people dealing with muscular lower back pain, tightness and movement restrictions.

Rather than automatically treating the same painful spot every session, I look at how you're moving, what your back is doing during the movements that bother you, and other relevant factors such as your hips, training, work and daily activity.

Treatment is then tailored around what I find and what you're trying to get back to doing.

Dealing With Lower Back Pain or Tightness?

Lower back problems don't always feel the same.

You might notice a constant muscular ache after sitting at work, tightness when bending forward, discomfort after training, or a back that suddenly feels guarded and difficult to move.

For lifters and active people, symptoms might become more noticeable during squats, deadlifts, RDLs or other loaded movements. For someone working at a desk or doing physical work, the problem may instead build throughout the day.

You don't need to work out exactly what's causing your symptoms before booking.

Your first appointment starts with a discussion about what you're experiencing and how it's affecting your movement, work, training and everyday activities.

How Do I Approach Lower Back Pain?

I start by assessing your presentation rather than going straight into massage.

Depending on your symptoms, this may include looking at relevant movements, range of motion and strength. I may also assess areas around the hips and other regions that could be relevant to how you're moving.

Your work, training history, recent changes in activity and what aggravates or eases your symptoms can also provide useful information.

The goal is to understand your presentation well enough to choose treatment that makes sense for you, rather than simply following the same lower back massage routine for everyone. everyday activities.

What Can Lower Back Pain
Treatment Include?

Treatment is tailored to your assessment and may include remedial massage, sports massage, deep tissue techniques, trigger point therapy and stretching.

Where appropriate, IASTM may also be incorporated as one component of your treatment.

Pressure and technique selection are adjusted to your presentation and feedback. Treatment doesn't need to involve maximum pressure or severe discomfort to be worthwhile.

The focus is on relevant muscular tension, discomfort and movement restriction rather than automatically providing a full-body massage.

Do You Only Treat the Lower Back?

Not necessarily.

The painful area matters, but I don't assume the location of your pain tells us everything we need to know.

Depending on your presentation, I may also look at relevant hip movement, strength, surrounding muscular tension and movements that reproduce your symptoms.

For someone who lifts, that could also mean looking at how comfortable you are squatting, hinging or bracing. For someone whose symptoms are aggravated by work, we may need to consider the positions and physical demands you're repeatedly exposed to.

This helps keep treatment relevant to your actual problem rather than repeatedly working on the same sore area without considering anything else.

Will I Get Exercises for My Lower Back?

Where appropriate and appointment time permits, I may give you a small selection of exercises, stretches or movement recommendations to work on between appointments.

That could involve mobility, strengthening, movement control or modifications to an aggravating activity, depending on what your assessment indicates.

Exercises are normally demonstrated during the appointment, and I usually send you a PDF afterwards so you know what you're working on.

The aim isn't to hand you a huge generic exercise program. Your exercise aftercare should be relevant to your symptoms, movement and goals.

Can I Keep Training With Lower Back Pain?

It depends on your presentation.

I don't automatically tell every client with lower back pain to stop training completely. Where appropriate, an aggravating exercise may be modified or temporarily regressed while you maintain other activity that you're tolerating well.

From there, the goal may be to progressively rebuild comfortable movement, strength and confidence with the movements that matter to you.

If your symptoms suggest that further investigation or care outside my scope is appropriate, I'll recommend referral rather than trying to treat something that shouldn't be managed through remedial massage alone.

Why Choose My Massage Therapist for Lower Back Pain?

My Massage Therapist takes an assessment-led approach to lower back pain rather than providing the same massage routine to every client.

I'm a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist with more than 4 years of hands-on experience and over 3,000 treatment sessions. I also hold Certificate III and IV in Fitness and a Certificate in Allied Health Assistance, which complement the movement and exercise side of my approach.

I regularly work with CrossFit athletes, lifters, runners, gym-goers and other active people, as well as general remedial massage clients.

That means the conversation isn't only about where it hurts. It's also about what your lower back problem is stopping you from doing and what we can appropriately work on to help you move forward.
