DOMS & Post-Training Soreness Massage in Liverpool
Feeling sore after a hard training session, competition or sudden increase in workload can make the next few days of movement and training uncomfortable.
At My Massage Therapist in Liverpool, I provide sports massage for athletes, lifters, runners and gym-goers dealing with DOMS, muscular soreness and post-training tightness.
Treatment is tailored around what you've done, how you're feeling now and what's coming up next in your training. The goal isn't to promise instant recovery or remove every bit of soreness. It's to provide appropriate hands-on treatment and practical advice based on your current presentation.
Feeling beaten up after a big training week or event?
What Is DOMS?
DOMS, or delayed onset muscle soreness, is the muscular soreness and stiffness that can develop after demanding or unfamiliar exercise.
You might notice it after:
A high-volume CrossFit session
Heavy squats or deadlifts
Returning to training after time off
A long run
A competition or sporting event
High-volume leg training
Sprinting or jumping
Introducing unfamiliar exercises
A sudden increase in training workload
You may feel stiff, tender or generally heavy through the muscles you've trained.
Not every pain after training should automatically be treated as DOMS, though. If something feels significantly different from normal post-training soreness, I'll want to understand what happened before deciding how to approach treatment.
Can Sports Massage Help With DOMS?
Sports massage can be used for muscular soreness, tightness and movement restrictions around demanding training or competition.
Your session isn't based on the idea that massage “flushes lactic acid” or removes toxins from your muscles.
Instead, I tailor treatment around which areas are sore, how your movement feels and what you've recently been doing.
Depending on your presentation, treatment may include sports or remedial massage, deep tissue techniques, trigger point therapy and stretching.
The amount of pressure is also adjusted to how you're feeling. If your muscles are already extremely sore from training, harder isn't automatically better.
What Happens During a Post-Training Sports Massage?
Your appointment starts with a quick discussion about your training and how your body is feeling.
I want to know what you've recently done, which areas feel particularly worked and what training or competition you have coming up.
Where appropriate, I'll assess relevant movement or range of motion before treatment.
From there, the massage is targeted to the areas that actually need attention rather than automatically following a full-body routine.
Treatment may include:
Sports massage
Remedial massage techniques
Deep tissue techniques
Trigger point therapy
Stretching
IASTM where appropriate
Reassessment where useful
Practical aftercare recommendations
The session can be adjusted depending on whether you're simply sore after training, dealing with persistent tightness or preparing for another demanding session or event.
Is Post-Training Soreness the Same as an Injury?
Not necessarily.
Normal training soreness and an injury aren't the same thing, which is why I'll ask about how the symptoms started and what they feel like.
General soreness across muscles after a demanding or unfamiliar workout may fit a post-training presentation.
A sudden sharp pain during a lift, sprint or movement is different.
If something happened during training and your symptoms don't sound like ordinary post-training soreness, I'll assess what's appropriate within my scope and recommend further investigation if needed.
You don't need to decide for yourself before booking. Just tell me what happened.
Should Sports Massage After Training Be Painful?
No.
If you're already sore from a hard training session, the goal isn't to see how much additional discomfort you can tolerate.
Pressure and techniques are adjusted to your presentation and feedback.
Some areas may still feel tender during treatment, particularly when they're already sore, but severe pain or bruising isn't the goal.
A harder massage isn't automatically a better sports massage.
When Should I Book a Sports Massage Around Training?
It depends on why you're booking and what's coming up next.
Someone booking because they're generally sore after a hard training block may need a different approach from an athlete with an important competition approaching.
Tell me what you've recently done and what's coming next.
That allows me to adjust the treatment to the situation rather than treating every sports massage appointment the same way.
If you've got a competition, race or demanding training session coming up, mentioning it when you attend helps me keep the treatment relevant to your schedule.
Do I Need Exercises for DOMS?
Not everyone booking for post-training soreness needs an exercise program.
If you're dealing with straightforward soreness after a demanding session, your aftercare may be relatively simple.
If the appointment identifies a persistent movement restriction or another issue that's been repeatedly affecting your training, relevant exercises or movement recommendations may be appropriate.
Where prescribed, exercise aftercare can include mobility, stability or movement-control work depending on your presentation.
The goal is to give you something useful, not add unnecessary homework simply because you've booked an appointment.
Why Choose My Massage Therapist for Post-Training Soreness?
I'm a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist with more than 4 years of hands-on experience and over 3,000 treatment sessions.
I also hold Certificate III and IV in Fitness and a Certificate in Allied Health Assistance.
I regularly work with people who actually train, including CrossFit athletes, lifters, runners, gym-goers and competitors across different sports.
That means you can tell me your quads are cooked after squats, your calves are struggling after running or your shoulders feel restricted after high-volume overhead work without needing to translate everything into clinical terminology.
I want to understand what you've trained, what you're feeling and what you need to do next.
Treatment is then built around that.
