Hip Pain & Tightness Treatment in Liverpool

Hip pain or tightness can make squatting, running, walking, sitting and getting into certain positions feel uncomfortable or restricted.

At My Massage Therapist in Liverpool, I provide assessment-led remedial and sports massage for muscular hip pain, tightness and movement restrictions.

Rather than assuming your hip simply needs to be “loosened up”, I look at your symptoms, relevant hip movement and strength, and the activities that are giving you trouble. Your lower back, legs, training, work and everyday movement may also be considered where appropriate.

Treatment is then tailored around what I find and what you're trying to get back to doing.

Hip pain or tightness affecting your movement?

What Does Hip Pain & Tightness Feel Like?

Hip problems can feel different depending on the person and the activities involved.

You might notice:

  • Tightness around the front or side of the hip

  • Muscular discomfort around the glutes

  • Restricted movement when squatting

  • Difficulty getting into deeper squat positions

  • Tightness after sitting for long periods

  • Discomfort during running or gym training

  • Restriction during lunges or split squats

  • Difficulty moving your hip through certain ranges

  • Muscular tightness after increases in training

Sometimes the main complaint isn't significant pain. You may simply feel that one or both hips aren't moving as comfortably as you'd like.

You don't need to know which muscle is responsible before booking.

How Do I Assess Hip Pain & Tightness?

I start by finding out what you're experiencing and which movements or activities are affected.

Depending on your presentation, I may assess relevant hip range of motion, movement and strength.

For an active client, that could also mean considering movements such as squats, lunges or hip hinges where they're relevant to the problem.

I may look beyond the hip too.

Your lower back, knee, surrounding muscular tension and other areas may be worth considering depending on how your symptoms present.

Your training, work and everyday activity also provide useful context. A hip that feels restricted during deep squats presents a different problem to someone whose main complaint is muscular tightness after sitting at work.

The assessment helps determine where treatment should focus.

Can Remedial Massage Help With Tight Hips?

Remedial massage may help address relevant muscular tension, discomfort and movement restrictions around the hip.

Depending on your assessment, treatment may involve relevant areas around the glutes, lateral hip, upper thigh or other surrounding muscles.

Techniques may include remedial or sports massage, deep tissue techniques, trigger point therapy and stretching.

IASTM may also be incorporated briefly where appropriate.

I don't automatically treat every muscle around the hip because an area feels tight. Treatment is selected according to your presentation and what we're trying to achieve.

Is a Tight Hip Always a Flexibility Problem?

No.

Feeling tight doesn't automatically mean a muscle is physically too short or that stretching it more will resolve the problem.

Sometimes mobility may be relevant. In other presentations, strength, movement control, training demands or the amount of load you're currently asking the area to tolerate may also be worth considering.

That's one reason I don't want the appointment to consist of repeatedly loosening the same area without reassessing what's happening.

If your hip keeps feeling tight during the same movement, I want to understand that movement as well as the sensation of tightness.

What If My Hips Feel Tight When I Squat?

Tell me where in the squat you notice the restriction and what it feels like.

For lifters and CrossFit athletes, hip tightness can become particularly noticeable when trying to reach depth, maintain a comfortable squat position or perform higher-volume lower-body training.

Where appropriate, I can assess relevant hip movement, range of motion and strength alongside the squat or other movements you're having trouble with.

The goal isn't to force every person into an identical squat position.

Your structure, training history, mobility, strength and individual movement can differ. The assessment is about identifying what appears relevant to your presentation rather than labelling every difference as a defect that needs correcting.

Will I Get Exercises for Hip Pain or Tightness?

Where appropriate and appointment time permits, yes.

Your exercise aftercare may include a small number of mobility, strengthening, stability, activation or movement-control exercises.

If training is aggravating the area, we may also discuss appropriate activity modifications.

The exercises should relate to what came up during your assessment rather than being a generic “tight hips” routine.

I normally demonstrate prescribed exercises during your appointment and send you a PDF afterwards.

Can I Keep Training With Hip Pain?

It depends on your presentation.

I don't automatically tell every client with hip pain or tightness to stop training.

If you're tolerating certain exercises well, there may be no reason to remove everything. An aggravating movement may instead be modified or temporarily regressed where appropriate while you maintain other tolerable activity.

From there, the aim may be to gradually rebuild the movements or loading that have been giving you trouble.

If your symptoms suggest further investigation is appropriate, I'll recommend referral rather than encouraging you to simply keep pushing through them.

Why Choose My Massage Therapist for Hip Pain & Tightness?

I'm a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist with more than 4 years of hands-on experience and over 3,000 treatment sessions.

I also hold Certificate III and IV in Fitness and a Certificate in Allied Health Assistance, complementing the movement and exercise side of my approach.

I regularly work with CrossFit athletes, lifters, runners, gym-goers and other active people, as well as general remedial massage clients.

My approach is assessment-led.

That means I don't assume every tight hip needs more stretching or every painful hip needs the same massage routine.

I look at what's relevant to your presentation, provide targeted hands-on treatment and add practical movement or exercise recommendations where appropriate.
