Shoulder Pain Treatment in Liverpool
Shoulder pain can quickly become frustrating when it affects pressing, pulling, reaching overhead, sleeping or simply using your arm normally.
At My Massage Therapist in Liverpool, I provide assessment-led remedial and sports massage for shoulder pain, muscular tightness and movement restrictions.
I don't automatically focus treatment on the exact spot that hurts. Depending on your presentation, I may look at shoulder movement, strength and control alongside relevant areas such as the upper back, chest and neck.
For lifters, CrossFit athletes and gym-goers, I can also look at the movements that are giving you trouble so treatment and aftercare are relevant to what you're trying to get back to doing.
Shoulder pain affecting your training or everyday movement?
What Does Shoulder Pain Feel Like?
Shoulder pain can present as an ache, tightness, restricted movement or discomfort during particular arm positions.
You might notice problems when:
Reaching or lifting overhead
Pressing or pulling at the gym
Getting into an overhead squat or snatch position
Reaching behind your back
Lying on the affected side
Carrying or lifting at work
Performing repetitive arm movements
Moving your arm through certain ranges
For some people, the shoulder feels fine during normal daily activity but becomes uncomfortable under load. For others, even basic reaching can become irritating.
You don't need to identify the exact muscle or know what's causing the problem before making an appointment.
How Do I Assess Shoulder Pain?
I start by understanding what you're experiencing and which movements are giving you trouble.
Depending on your presentation, assessment may include relevant shoulder range of motion, strength and movement testing. I may also look at the neck, upper back, chest and shoulder-blade movement where appropriate.
For someone who trains, I also want to understand when the problem appears.
Does it hurt during pressing? Pull-ups? Bench press? Overhead work? The receiving position of a snatch? Does the shoulder become uncomfortable as training volume increases?
Those details help me make the appointment specific to you instead of treating every shoulder complaint the same way.
Can Remedial Massage Help With Shoulder Pain?
Remedial massage may be useful when muscular tension, discomfort or movement restriction forms part of your shoulder presentation.
Treatment may involve relevant muscles around the shoulder, chest, upper back and neck depending on what comes up during your assessment.
Techniques can include remedial or sports massage, deep tissue techniques, trigger point therapy and stretching. IASTM may also be incorporated briefly where appropriate.
The goal isn't to use every technique available. It's to select treatment that makes sense for your presentation and reassess how you're responding.
Do You Only Treat Where My Shoulder Hurts?
Not necessarily.
The location of your symptoms is useful information, but I don't assume the painful spot is the only area worth assessing.
Depending on your presentation, muscular tension around the pecs, upper traps, neck or upper back may be relevant. Shoulder-blade movement, strength and control may also be worth looking at.
This is especially useful when the shoulder keeps becoming uncomfortable during a particular lift or movement.
Repeatedly massaging the sore spot may provide temporary relief, but if there are other relevant factors affecting the movement, I want to identify those too.
What If My Shoulder Pain Only Happens When Lifting?
Bring that information to your appointment.
I regularly work with lifters, CrossFit athletes and gym-goers, so if your shoulder becomes painful or restricted during a particular exercise, we'll discuss the movement and how the problem affects your training.
Where practical and appropriate, assessment can look at relevant movements, range of motion, strength and control.
That doesn't mean I'll automatically tell you to stop training.
Depending on your presentation, you may be able to maintain tolerable activity while modifying or temporarily regressing movements that aggravate the shoulder. From there, exercises can be progressed according to your response.
Sports massage may be particularly relevant when your shoulder problem is connected with lifting, sport or training.
Will I Get Shoulder Exercises?
Where appropriate and appointment time permits, I may prescribe a small number of exercises or movement recommendations based on your assessment.
These may involve mobility, strengthening, stability, activation or movement control.
The exercises should have a reason for being there. I don't want to hand you a long generic shoulder routine simply because your shoulder hurts.
Your exercise aftercare is intended to complement the hands-on treatment and give you something practical to work on between appointments.
Exercises are normally demonstrated during the appointment and provided as a PDF afterwards.
Why Choose My Massage Therapist for Shoulder Pain?
I'm a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist with more than 4 years of hands-on experience and over 3,000 treatment sessions.
I also hold Certificate III and IV in Fitness and a Certificate in Allied Health Assistance, which complement my approach when assessing movement and providing appropriate exercise aftercare.
I work with general remedial massage clients as well as CrossFit athletes, lifters, runners, gym-goers and other active people.
If your goal is getting back to overhead lifting, pressing comfortably, doing your job or simply reaching without the same restriction, that's what I want the appointment to stay focused on.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes.
You don't need a self-diagnosis before making an appointment.
I can assess relevant movement, range of motion, strength and muscular findings within my scope. I don't provide a guaranteed medical diagnosis, and I'll recommend further investigation or referral if your presentation requires care outside remedial massage.
-
Not automatically.
Whether you should continue, modify or temporarily avoid a movement depends on your individual presentation.
Where appropriate, I prefer to identify what you can tolerate, modify aggravating movements and progressively rebuild rather than automatically removing all training.
-
Either may be appropriate depending on your presentation.
If your shoulder problem is closely connected with CrossFit, lifting, gym training or sport, Sports Massage may be particularly relevant.
You don't need to work this out before booking. Sports and Remedial Massage follow the same appointment structure and pricing, and we can determine the most appropriate approach based on your symptoms and goals.
-
Yes, if they're relevant to your assessment.
Shoulder presentations can involve muscular tension or movement restrictions outside the exact painful area. Treatment is targeted according to what I find rather than being limited to one spot.
-
There isn't a fixed number that applies to everyone.
Your symptoms, how long you've had them, training or work demands, assessment findings and response to treatment can all influence the plan.
I'll reassess your progress rather than promising that a predetermined number of appointments will resolve the problem.
Sports and Remedial Massage share the same appointment pricing, and the most appropriate approach and techniques can be discussed based on your presentation.
