Sports massage therapist providing hands-on neck treatment

Neck Pain & Stiffness Treatment in Liverpool

A stiff or painful neck can make simple things like turning your head while driving, working at a desk, sleeping comfortably or training much more frustrating.

At My Massage Therapist in Liverpool, I provide assessment-led remedial and sports massage for neck pain, muscular tightness and movement restrictions.

Your appointment isn't just about massaging wherever it hurts. I look at your neck movement, relevant muscular tension and other factors that may be contributing to your presentation, including your shoulders, upper back, work demands and training where appropriate.

Treatment is then tailored around your symptoms, movement and what you're trying to get back to doing comfortably.

What Does Neck Pain & Stiffness Feel Like?

Neck problems can range from a general feeling of tightness to noticeable restriction when you try to turn or tilt your head.

You may notice:

  • Tightness through the neck and upper shoulders

  • Difficulty turning your head comfortably

  • An ache that builds during desk work

  • Muscular tension after training

  • Stiffness after sleeping

  • Discomfort when checking over your shoulder while driving

  • Upper-back or shoulder tension alongside your neck symptoms

Sometimes the main complaint isn't pain at all. Your neck may simply feel restricted, guarded or harder to move than normal.

You don't need to know exactly which muscle or structure is involved before booking. Assessment comes first.

How Do I Assess Neck Pain?

I start by discussing what you're experiencing, when it started and what seems to aggravate or ease it.

Depending on your presentation, I may assess neck range of motion, relevant movements, muscular tension and strength where appropriate. I may also look beyond your neck at areas such as your shoulders, upper back and shoulder-blade movement when they're relevant to your symptoms.

Your work and training matter too.

If your neck becomes uncomfortable after hours at a computer, that's useful context. If you're a lifter and your neck or upper traps tighten during particular exercises, I'll want to know when it happens and how it affects your training.

The aim is to build a clearer picture before deciding where treatment should focus.

How Can Remedial Massage Help With Neck Tightness?

Remedial massage may be used to address relevant muscular tension, discomfort and movement restriction around the neck, shoulders and upper back.

Depending on your assessment, treatment may include targeted remedial or sports massage, deep tissue techniques, trigger point therapy and stretching.

Treatment isn't automatically a full-body massage. If you've booked because turning your neck is uncomfortable, the appointment can focus on the areas most relevant to that presentation.

Pressure is also adjusted to you. Maximum pressure and severe discomfort aren't required for treatment to be worthwhile.

Do You Only Massage the Neck?

Not always.

Where you feel pain or tightness is important, but repeatedly working on the same tight area may overlook other relevant factors.

For example, shoulder-blade movement, muscular tension around the chest or upper back, training demands and prolonged working positions may be worth considering depending on your presentation.

This is particularly relevant when neck or upper-trap tightness keeps returning.

Rather than assuming one muscle simply needs to be worked harder each appointment, I assess what's relevant to your movement and symptoms and tailor treatment from there.

What Happens During a Neck Pain Appointment?

Your first appointment starts with a conversation about your symptoms, health history, work, lifestyle, training and goals.

From there, I perform an appropriate assessment before beginning hands-on treatment.

Treatment may include:

  • Remedial or sports massage

  • Deep tissue techniques

  • Trigger point therapy

  • Stretching

  • IASTM where appropriate

  • Reassessment of relevant neck movement

  • Exercise or movement advice where appropriate

IASTM is only incorporated when I consider it appropriate as part of the broader appointment. It's not automatically used simply because an area feels tight.

After treatment, I may reassess movements such as neck rotation so we can see how you're responding.

Will I Get Neck Stretches or Exercises?

Where they're relevant and appointment time permits, yes.

Your aftercare may include a small number of stretches, strengthening exercises, mobility exercises or movement recommendations based on what came up during your assessment.

For someone spending long periods sitting, practical movement strategies may also be discussed. For an active client, the advice may instead relate to training or exercises that are aggravating the area.

When exercises or stretches are prescribed, I normally demonstrate them and send you a PDF afterwards.

The goal of exercise aftercare is to give you something practical to work on between appointments, rather than relying entirely on hands-on treatment.
